Helen CalderTutoring and Academic Mentoring
As an experienced primary school teacher, qualified life-coach and parent, I support the whole child - helping to build confidence as they learn and achieve their full potential.

WHY CHOOSE ME TO TuTOR YOUR CHILD?
I am a qualified and experienced teacher with a creative approach to learning which is tailored to your child's needs. I am a friendly but focused tutor and I create a safe, supportive environment for your child to learn. I have taught in three different primary schools with a wide variety of pupils, achieving excellent results with whole Year 6 classes in SATs tests and encouraging individual students to achieve their best, whatever their starting point. I also tutor for 11 Plus preparation and invigilate mock exams with Cotswold Education. Whether your child needs some extra academic support to build their confidence or wants to excel by stretching themselves academically, I am here to help.
How do I know what support my child needs? If your child lacks confidence in their class work at school or is worried about SATs tests, they may benefit from the opportunity to work on gaps in their understanding with the full attention of a 1:1 tutor. As they improve in these areas, confidence and self-esteem is raised and often helps to support your child's progress at school. If your child is in Year 5 and working consistently at 'Greater Depth' (above average), you may consider an application to one of Gloucestershire's selective grammar schools. A tutor can be useful in preparing for the types of questions encountered and accelerating the learning of the content required for the 11 plus exam which is taken externally at the beginning of Year 6.11 Plus preparation covers verbal and non-verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, English and advanced maths. 11 Plus tutees are strongly recommended to continue preparation outside of the tutoring session. I favour a 'little and often' approach and encourage children not to give up their usual out of school hobbies and interests.
About me
I am passionate about teaching and learning and encouraging others to reach their full potential whilst enjoying the process to get there! I use a range of teaching strategies to approach difficult topics and agree clear 'next steps' with my pupils so they always know exactly what it is they are aiming for and what to celebrate when they achieve it. I love teaching and tutoring because I am also a lifelong learner. I am a violinist, pianist, keen reader, writer, Enneagram practitioner and life-coach. I also enjoy walking with my husband and daughter.
